On October 28, 2020, Results for America and the National Governors Association co-hosted a virtual Training Workshop for gubernatorial staff from 20 states, plus Puerto Rico and Guam. In this training, state leaders discussed how their governments were Managing for Results as described in Results for America’s Blueprint for Delivering Results in State Government. The Managing and Achieving Better Results for Residents Training Workshop is a first in a series of training opportunities co-hosted by Results for America and the National Governors Association based on the Blueprint for Delivering Results in State Government.
The session started with remarks by Michael Bonino-Britsch, Policy Analyst at the National Governors Association for Best Practices. He shared about the importance of data in state governments’ COVID-19 public health and economic responses. Jed Herrmann, Vice President of State and Federal Policy Implementation at Results for America; and Josh Inaba, Senior Manager of State and Federal Policy at Results for America, provided a brief overview of the Blueprint for Delivering Results for State Government and described practical applications the Managing for Results theme.
Kate Tromble, Vice President of Federal Policy at Results for America, moderated a panel discussion with Pete Bernady, Minnesota’s Chief Evaluation Officer; Adam Jarvis, Deputy Director of Tennessee’s Customer Focused Government; and Heather Velaszquez, Deputy Director of Colorado’s Operations and Cabinet Affairs, to discuss the Managing for Results theme in practice. The panelists provided insight into how each state has successfully built on their Governor’s commitment to data, evidence, and results; implemented leading models of strategic planning; developed community engagement strategies; and linked these efforts to performance-based and evidence-based state budgeting.
Charles Sallee, Deputy Director for Budget for New Mexico’s Legislative Finance Committee, provided insight on further leveraging performance data in the legislative process to help state governments and legislatures invest their limited funds more effectively in their budgets.
