Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry said the city is teaming up with others in a national effort to see how the ‘moneyball’ approach touted in baseball can work for governments.

The “America’s Moneyball for Government campaign” focuses on three ideas: look for evidence of policies and programs that achieve the most effective and efficient results; invest in programs that use data to demonstrate they work; and reduce spending on programs that fail to achieve measurable outcomes.

Gilbert Montano, Berry’s chief of staff, will be part of the first 11-member national training class that is being organized to outline how the project could work.

“I’m proud to join the Moneyball for Government All-Star team because I believe we should invest taxpayer dollars as effectively and efficiently as possible,” Berry said in a statement. “I am also proud to congratulate my chief of staff, Gilbert Montano, on being chosen to represent Albuquerque in the new Local Moneyball for Government fellowship program that will help us better utilize data, evidence and evaluation to improve the lives of Albuquerque’s residents.”
